KING LIVING

21 August 2018 1745 Views

King Living’s third instalment of Living Spaces with Neale Whitaker features the dynamic
Alexandra and Genevieve Smart of Australian fashion-lifestyle brand Ginger & Smart.
Together with Neale, the sisters discuss their influences,
Australian style and fashion within the home.

Alexandra and Genevieve Smart know better than most that personal style is an individual’s form of expression. Exuding cool confidence,
Ginger & Smart underpins contemporary luxury, combining polish with playfulness in their designs. King Living’s brand ethos
resonates strongly with the label, and, like Ginger & Smart, are renowned for imbuing quality designs and structures
with a uniquely Australian sense of contemporary luxury.

Resting upon the exquisite Zaza sofa, the women behind Ginger & Smart made colour and texture choices which were inspired by the
brand’s Spring collection. Overlooking one of Sydney’s spectacular beaches, the light-filled interior houses the award-winning Zaza,
upholstered in a rose-hued, textured Positano fabric. Soft, pastel pink accent cushions are grounded by earthy olive greens and warm,
dark timber accents, creating an effortlessly chic look.

“The choice was around the texture...and the idea of spring, a new season of life and beauty –
the olive green and beautiful pale pink are colours that really speak to us…they translate beautifully."
Alexandra Smart

The Zaza sofa, sure to become a King Living classic, offers enticing deep seats and a relaxed feel. Its supple form is extended
with adjustable arms and backs, as well as the latest addition of an angled chaise. Like Ginger & Smart designs, King Living’s Zaza
is masterfully poised, offering a timeless design which can be styled to suit any living space.

When it comes to Australian style, Genevieve notes how Australia’s rugged landscape and harsh climate are balanced by a sweet fragility.
This unique environment is a source of inspiration for the sisters when they are designing, especially in striking the balance of embracing
femininity whilst also appealing to strong, intelligent women.

“There’s a real strength but also a fragility…things like wattle…strong but also delicate…
and it’s really unique to the rest of the world… in that Australia is so harsh, yet so delicate too."
Genevieve Smart

Neale touches on the link between fashion and home, as two seemingly separate worlds have edged closer in recent years.
Alexandra remarks that “one inspires the other”, with some of the label’s inspiration coming through in her own home,
whilst maintaining a relaxed, comfortable space to raise her children.

“My home is really quite relaxed and a bubble that I want my kids to be happy and feel at home in that space...
so I’ve gone for greens and blues, blacks and whites…. I change that up with cushions, colour, a bit of quirk and fun."
Alexandra Smart

In an age of “fast” fashion, Alexandra provides the antithesis: “slow” fashion, a concept which involves considered choices,
using quality materials and creating for the future. Both King Living and Ginger & Smart place a strong
emphasis on quality and longevity, as well as individuality.

The Ginger & Smart brand is what Neale refers to as a stunning “kaleidoscope of memories, people and places”
which translates beautifully to their own living spaces, as ultimately, a home reflects a personal story.

“It really is about storytelling isn’t it?”
Neale Whitaker

Ginger & Smart for Sydney Women's Fund

Ginger & Smart for Sydney Women's Fund

GINGER & SMART has partnered with Sydney Community Foundation’s Sydney (SCFS) Women’s Fund to help transform one of their Place Based social enterprise programs in Fairfield, the Women’s Friendship Sewing Circle.

The program which started three years ago, is for migrant and refugee women in Fairfield, mainly of Syrian and Iraqi background co-designed and funded through Parent’s Café Inc, a migrant support centre within Fairfield High School. The idea was to bring women together to share stories and skills, across generations and to learn about working life in Australia .

The collaboration with GINGER & SMART will make the program into a wage paying social enterprise. A group of women managed by retail store and not for profit The Social Outfit in Newtown, will be paid to produce the tote bag designed by GINGER & SMART.

The dramatic graphic bag designed by GINGER & SMART bears the words KIND and STRONG inspired by Sydney Community Foundation’s umbrella Be Kind Sydney, a fund everyone can give to assist those in need in our city.

“Giving back to those less fortunate we believe is a social responsibility of business. The fashion industry has given us both so many opportunities and we feel it is important to mentor and assist where we can. These fantastic women come together after unbelievable personal hardships and start to make friends and talk and bond over a sewing circle. It’s a reminder of the power of a new start.” says Genevieve and Alexandra Smart.

As well as designing the bag, Genevieve and Alexandra Smart are running mentoring masterclasses with the women at Fairfield who plan to design their own products to sell to grow their enterprise. The girls will teach them how to make the bag, about material and design choices, their insights as an enduring Australian fashion brand and financial management in a fashion business.

The large tote carries the 2018 message for women: KIND and STRONG.

Below is a quote from Haitham Jaju, a former UN representative who set up the programs to support fellow refugees.

“One of the ladies she lost four of her family members in the church in Baghdad. When she came here, she was very isolated. She wasn’t talking to anyone. Her family, they were concerned.

She lost her husband, her son, her grandson, and her daughter-in-law. She was a teacher in Iraq and also knew how to sew. One week, I approached her and she said no Haitham, I’m not in a good mood. She was crying all the time. I tell her, give yourself a chance and come, just for the ladies. So she joined the sewing team.

She found them, they were working, but not in the right way. She start...moving. Because this is her strength, something she is interested in. She told them, ‘no no, it’s not like that’. Then they did something else, and she said ‘no no, give me, I’ll do this’. Without any attention. I give the signs to the ladies to give her the chance to do that.

When she start doing this I ask her, will you please be the leader? So, she was the leader. She had ten women. The outcome was unbelievable. Her daughters they came and said ‘Haitham, what happened to my Mum?’ In the following session, she came with some designs. She was painting, drawing models, taking measures, providing guidance. This is one of the many examples that we have.”

The bags will be launched on International Women’s Day, Thursday 8th March 2018 and all proceeds from a limited edition run of 200 will go to The SCFS to ensure the financial funding of the Fairfield Women’s Friendship Sewing Circle for another year. The bag is available via www.gingerandsmart.com

SISTER ACT

To celebrate the launch of their autumn/winter collection,
style gurus and the brains behind label Ginger & Smart,
Alexandra and Genevieve Smart, took their favourite creatives to
Sydney restaurant Nour for a new-season Middle Eastern feast.

INTERVIEW PHOEBE WOOD RECIPES ROY NER PHOTOGRAPHY BRETT STEVENS STYLING EMMALY STEWART

When the stylish siblings behind fashion label Ginger & Smart, Alexandra and Genevieve Smart, first set eyes on Nour Restaurant in Sydney,
they couldn’t believe its resemblance to their own boutiques.

“We came here for lunch one day and the design similarities with our business were really striking,” says Alexandra of the Surry Hills eatery,
which opened in late 2016. “Between the rose gold, terrazzo and marble, and the influence of nature, it’s all very us,” adds Genevieve.
Then they sampled the adventurous Middle Eastern menu and were hooked.

So it was fitting that the Smart sisters, who recently celebrated a decade in the industry, would host a lunch at Nour to toast their latest collection.
Gathered around the table were actress Danielle Cormack, photographer Ian Butterworth, artist Rachel Castle, interior designer Shannon Fricke,
publicist Adam Worling, choreographer and artistic director Rafael Bonachela, gallery director Ali Yeldham, restaurateur and artist Daimon Downey,
and Krinklewood wines brand manager Danika Windrim. “It’s a wonderful mix of friends and people we admire,” says Genevieve, surveying the scene.

As the sisters spoke, guests toasted with glasses of Krinklewood’s Francesca rosé. Nour chef Roy Ner designed a luscious and transporting menu
for the occasion. Starters included scallops with a creamy broad bean ful, and lamb sambousek, a heavily spiced pastry. Roasted spatchcock then
took centre stage, drizzled in a vibrant red harissa oil, while silky confit ocean trout was sweetened with bright persimmon.

Sommelier Patrick Agostinelli chose delicate white wines, including a local sauvignon blanc and a Greek assyrtiko.

In a synchronous twist, the vivid dishes, the contemporary setting and Nour’s abundant greenery all evoked the themes of Ginger & Smart’s
autumn/winter collection. Key prints include graphic-overlayed florals in colour combinations such as marigold and aqua.
“It’s all about fusing nature and emerging technology,” says Alexandra, raising a glass.
